Manchester United are on course to complete the signing of Atalanta midfielder Ederson for £39 million before the start of pre-season, with the club aiming to have the deal wrapped up by the beginning of July.

The Brazilian will become United’s marquee midfield addition of the summer window, but the club’s recruitment plans extend well beyond that one signing. United have confirmed interest in West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes, who is available following the Hammers’ relegation to the Championship. Arsenal and PSG are also tracking the 22-year-old, and it remains unclear whether United would pursue both Fernandes and Ederson in the same window given the financial outlay involved.

On the left flank, United are weighing several options. Patrick Dorgu impressed at left wing before an injury curtailed his season in January, and the club is considering deploying him there on a permanent basis. Newcastle’s Lewis Hall has also been identified as a target, though his three years remaining on contract and Newcastle’s strengthened financial position — boosted by the sale of Anthony Gordon — make a deal complicated. Academy left-back Harry Amass, who spent last season on loan in the Championship, could provide internal cover for the injured Luke Shaw.

Chief executive Omar Berrada addressed the club’s transfer philosophy in an interview this week, outlining United’s intention to replicate the structured approach of last summer’s window and emphasising the importance of completing business on the club’s own terms.

On the outgoing side, United are actively looking to sell Manuel Ugarte to generate funds. Marcus Rashford and André Onana are also available, with Trabzonspor’s president stating he hopes to reach an agreement with Onana within days. Rashford’s situation is more complex: Barcelona hold a £26m option to sign him permanently, but that clause must be triggered by June 15. With Barça having moved quickly to sign Anthony Gordon from Newcastle, the Spanish club are widely expected to let the option lapse, leaving Rashford’s future unresolved.
