Unbeaten Edinburgh equal best URC start in 11 years after five-try rout of Lions
Edinburgh Rugby moved to four wins from four in the United Rugby Championship, matching their finest league start in over a decade with a commanding 31-10 victory over the Lions at the Hive Stadium.
Edinburgh Rugby sit top of the United Rugby Championship after a 31-10 win over the Lions at the Hive Stadium secured a fourth consecutive victory, equalling the club’s best start to a league season in 11 years.
Scrum-half Hector Patterson, who recently signed a contract extension, crossed twice in a Player of the Match display as Edinburgh ran in five tries. The Lions, despite being considered a dangerous attacking side, were held to a single try.
Head coach Sean Everitt was measured in his assessment. “It’s great that we are able to build momentum early in the competition,” he said. “There’s a long way to go, we know that. I am just happy that we got the result and, in these conditions, a bonus point too. The guys managed the game well and the passes stuck. I just thought they showed bravery with ball in hand.”
Everitt acknowledged the value of the current run while keeping expectations grounded. “There’s a good vibe at the moment and obviously winning does bring that. We have been on the other side where we haven’t won every week or lost three or four in a row and that’s tough. So we will enjoy it while it lasts.”
Glasgow Warriors held onto second place with a dramatic 24-20 comeback win over Benetton in Treviso. The Warriors trailed 17-0 early in the second half and still faced a 20-17 deficit in the closing stages before replacement lock Jare Oguntibeju forced over with two minutes remaining to seal the victory and a four-try bonus point.
The Vodacom Bulls climbed to third with a 34-26 bonus-point win over Ulster at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria. Springbok fly-half Handre Pollard landed five penalties to prove the decisive factor, while Curwin Bosch added a late penalty that denied Ulster a losing bonus point. Flanker Marcell Coetzee and Ulster winger Chay Mullins each crossed twice in a game that finished level on tries at four apiece.
The DHL Stormers sit fourth after the weekend’s highest-scoring contest, a 52-40 win over the Scarlets in Cape Town that produced 14 tries. The Scarlets recovered from 33-14 down at half-time to level at 40-40 with 14 minutes remaining, centre Joe Roberts completing a hat-trick in the process, but replacement fly-half Yaqeen Ahmed scored twice late on to secure the Stormers’ win.
The Hollywoodbets Sharks are fifth after a 36-21 bonus-point victory over Cardiff at the Arms Park, where three tries in the final quarter sealed the result. It ended Cardiff’s unbeaten home record stretching back to last December.
Leinster’s derby win over Munster lifted them to sixth, while the Ospreys jumped to seventh following their own derby victory over Dragons RFC.
