Leicester mock Pollock as 'child in Saints kit' after 28-7 derby demolition
Leicester Tigers' official match report took a pointed swipe at Henry Pollock following their 28-7 URC derby win over Northampton Saints at Welford Road, branding the England back-rower a 'child in Saints kit' after he sparked a first-half brawl.
Leicester Tigers’ official website mocked Henry Pollock as a “child in Saints kit” in their match report after the Tigers dismantled Northampton Saints 28-7 in a rain-soaked Midlands derby at Mattioli Woods Welford Road on Saturday.
Pollock, the highly-rated Northampton and England back-rower, was at the centre of a series of scuffles involving multiple Leicester players, with tensions boiling over as both sides headed for the tunnel at half-time. The flashpoints included confrontations with fellow England internationals Ollie Chessum and Freddie Steward.
Leicester’s post-match write-up stopped short of naming Pollock directly but left little doubt about its target. “A full 30-man brawl was started by a child in Saints kit and continued as he practised tying his laces on the walk up the tunnel,” the report read, appearing under the headline “Tigers smash Saints to take bragging rights”.
On the pitch, Northampton had led 7-3 at the interval through a James Pater try, with Steward’s penalty the only response from Geoff Parling’s side in the opening half. Leicester then outscored their rivals 25-0 after the break to claim a bonus-point victory in front of a sell-out crowd.
Jamie Blamire crossed from a maul before Cameron Henderson and Finn Carnduff added further tries. Billy Searle kicked a penalty and Steward completed the scoring with Leicester’s fourth try.
Reaction on social media was divided over Pollock’s conduct. “I genuinely love Henry Pollock as a rugby player but it’s hard to not think all the hype has gone to his head,” wrote Gareth Jenkinson on X. “Lots of old heads here with heaps of England caps seemingly tired of his schoolboy antics.”
Another user, Lee Jarvis, offered a more measured take: “I dread to think what would happen to Henry Pollock if he was playing in an era 25 years ago with some old school forwards with no TMO and loads of cameras. Love him or hate him, he’s a proper wind-up merchant.”
The incident adds another chapter to what is becoming a recurring theme around the 20-year-old, whose on-field combativeness has drawn as much attention as his considerable talent since breaking into the Northampton and England setups.
