Tottenham sign Sandro Tonali from Newcastle in £100m deal under Roberto De Zerbi
Tottenham Hotspur have completed the £100m signing of Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United, making the Italian midfielder their sixth summer addition. The 26-year-old joins on a long-term contract after 110 appearances and a Carabao Cup winner's medal at St James' Park.
Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United for a fee of £92.5 million, rising to £100m with add-ons, making the Italian midfielder the club’s sixth summer acquisition under head coach Roberto De Zerbi.
Tonali, 26, joins on a long-term contract in north London after three seasons at St James’ Park, where he made 110 appearances, scored ten goals across all competitions, and collected a Carabao Cup winner’s medal following Newcastle’s triumph in March 2025. He also featured 11 times in last season’s UEFA Champions League campaign.
“I’m very happy to be here,” Tonali said upon completing the move. “When I arrived at the club today, it felt fantastic. People said about there being four or five clubs — there was only one. I spoke to the Head Coach for close to two hours about the club, the fans, the stadium and our football. It was like magic because I knew immediately that I had to sign for Tottenham.”
De Zerbi, who shares a personal connection with the player — Tonali came through the youth system at Brescia, De Zerbi’s hometown club — was equally enthusiastic. “Sandro is a special player and a great signing for our club. I have followed him for a long time and I’m so happy to be working with him now. He was very clear in his desire to join Tottenham, and I know our fans will love what he brings to the team.”
The signing was announced in a video featuring teammate James Maddison, underlining the club’s efforts to attract Tonali over reported interest from several other sides.
In a farewell message posted to Instagram, Tonali paid tribute to Newcastle’s supporters. “Three years ago I came to Newcastle not really knowing what to expect. When things were hard for me, you were there. Not for one day did I feel alone. I felt it every time I was at St James’ Park.”
Newcastle’s official statement acknowledged Tonali’s contribution across his time on Tyneside, noting that he joined from AC Milan in the summer of 2023 and departed having won silverware with the club. “Everybody at Newcastle United thanks Sandro for his contribution and wishes him and his family well for the future.”
The deal represents one of the most significant transfers of the current summer window in the Premier League, and signals Tottenham’s ambition as De Zerbi continues to reshape his squad ahead of the 2026/27 season.
