Jordan Henderson was stretchered off the pitch and taken to hospital after fracturing his wrist during England’s post-match celebrations following their 3-2 World Cup victory over Mexico, with Thomas Tuchel warning the injury looks “really bad” and hinting at possible surgery.

The 36-year-old Brentford midfielder was hurt as England’s players leapt over the advertising hoardings to celebrate with supporters — a ritual that has become customary after World Cup wins — and performed a rendition of Oasis’ Wonderwall. On the way back onto the pitch, Henderson caught himself on the hoardings, lost his footing and tumbled to the ground. As he tried to break his fall, he placed his left arm on the turf and his wrist appeared to snap on impact.

Teammates quickly formed a huddle around him as medical staff rushed over. Henderson was treated with oxygen before being carried off on a stretcher and transported directly to hospital.

Speaking to the BBC immediately after the match, Tuchel said: “Not good, not good — Jordan just fell over and injured his wrist, it looks really bad.” At his subsequent press conference, the England manager added: “He injured his wrist, he’s gone to hospital, it’s quite a serious injury. It doesn’t fit with the night. I don’t know if there will be a procedure.”

The injury overshadowed what had been a dramatic and hard-fought victory. England raced into a 2-0 lead through a Jude Bellingham brace before Julian Quinones pulled one back for Mexico just before half-time. The contest grew more fraught early in the second half when right-back Jarell Quansah was dismissed for a reckless challenge, but England responded immediately through a Harry Kane penalty after Anthony Gordon was fouled. Raul Jimenez converted a spot-kick of his own to make it 3-2 and crank up the tension, yet Tuchel’s side held on.

England now face Norway in the World Cup quarter-final in Miami on Saturday. Erling Haaland scored twice as Stale Solbakken’s side produced a 2-1 upset victory over Brazil to reach the last eight.
