Man City set to loan Alleyne to Championship club after defensive depth tested last season
Manchester City are weighing up loan offers from several Championship clubs for 21-year-old defender Max Alleyne, who impressed Pep Guardiola after being recalled mid-season to cover injuries to Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol.
Manchester City are considering a Championship loan move for young defender Max Alleyne this summer, with multiple second-tier clubs already registering interest in the 21-year-old.
Alleyne is expected back at the club’s training ground in two weeks, when new head coach Enzo Maresca will meet his squad for the first time. The defender could feature on City’s pre-season tour to Asia before a loan deal is finalised ahead of the transfer window closing.
The left-sided centre-back spent the first half of last season on loan at Watford before City dramatically recalled him in January when Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias were both injured in the same match. Alleyne responded with a Premier League debut after just one training session and scored days later in the FA Cup, earning widespread praise from the club for cutting short his loan at short notice.
Alleyne had originally caught Guardiola’s eye after joining City from Southampton at 16, and City’s Under-21s coach Ben Wilkinson described him as one of the best young defenders in Europe two years ago. Despite suffering defeats to Manchester United and Bodø/Glimt during his brief spell in the first team, City viewed his contribution positively.
City’s centre-back options will again be stretched during pre-season. Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis are expected to travel to Asia, but Ruben Dias and Marc Guehi remain at the World Cup, while Gvardiol has only recently been eliminated. That situation could give Alleyne further first-team exposure under Maresca before a loan is agreed.
Despite the club’s appreciation for what Alleyne provided last season, City are prioritising his long-term development and want him playing regular football at a competitive level. Both the club and the player are working to identify the loan destination that offers the best environment for him to continue his progress.
