Dino Toppmöller is set to leave RC Lens just seven official matches after his arrival at La Gaillette. The 45-year-old German coach, recruited this summer to succeed Pierre Sage, appears not to have survived an accumulation of internal tensions that undermined his authority from the opening weeks.

On results, Toppmöller’s record is not catastrophic: he notably secured a victory against Paris Saint-Germain in the Trophée des Champions (1-0) and a win in Prague against Slavia (2-3). But league performances, combined with a lengthy injury list and summer signings lacking match fitness, never allowed him to establish the playing principles he intended to implement.

The real problem appears to have gone far beyond the pitch. According to Foot Mercato, tensions erupted as early as late August with several squad leaders, who quickly questioned the coach’s tactical choices and man-management. The situation did not improve thereafter, with disappointing results amplifying friction within the group. German newspaper Bild had also revealed strained relations between the club’s French staff and Nelson Morgado, Toppmöller’s assistant.

Faced with this situation, Lens’s management appears ready to act. However, the separation would come at a significant cost, with the coach having signed a two-year contract with his staff. There is also the question of succession: Yannick Cahuzac was tipped to eventually take over the first team, but his lack of the required coaching diploma exposes the club to fines of €25,000 per match.

RC Lens travel to AS Monaco in a few days’ time, second in Ligue 1 behind LOSC. A press conference with Toppmöller was initially scheduled for Wednesday at 1:15 p.m., but the club had not yet officially communicated on its coach’s future at the time of publication.
