Real Madrid, Barcelona, PSG and Bayern circle as 15-year-old Gabriel stuns Man United with exit demand

JJ Gabriel, the 15-year-old Manchester United academy winger, has demanded to leave the club, stunning officials at Old Trafford just days before he was due to make history as the club’s youngest-ever first-team player.

United had planned to include Gabriel in their squad for the Carabao Cup third-round tie against Brighton & Hove Albion on Wednesday night, a debut that would have made him the youngest player ever to represent the club in a competitive fixture. That plan now appears to be off the table.

According to The Athletic, four of Europe’s most powerful clubs — Real Madrid, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich — are all monitoring the situation and interested in signing the teenager. Madrid are said to have scouted Gabriel closely, including his hat-trick in United’s 5-0 UEFA Youth League victory over Sabah last Thursday, and reportedly feel well-positioned to land him should he depart.

The first sign that something was amiss came last week when Gabriel deleted all pictures from his Instagram profile without explanation. United officials remain unclear about what has prompted his desire to leave a club he has represented since the age of 11.

The club has no intention of granting his request and is working to find a resolution, acknowledging his considerable talent. However, they may have limited power to prevent his departure once he turns 16 on October 6th — a date that is now fast approaching.

Because Gabriel is homeschooled, he is not currently classified as a scholar or part of United’s full-time academy model. That distinction, combined with a potential European passport, could allow him to move to a foreign club on his 16th birthday — two years earlier than would otherwise be permitted. His father, Joe O’Cearuill, earned two caps for the Republic of Ireland, and his mother has Cypriot heritage, meaning Gabriel may hold either an Irish or Cypriot passport.

The financial stakes are significant. If Gabriel moves abroad under those circumstances, United would be entitled to only around £300,000 in compensation — a fraction of what they could command were he to join another English club.

The Daily Mail reports that a move to Spain has long been the preferred destination for the player and his family, adding further weight to speculation that Madrid or Barcelona could be the frontrunners if he does leave.
