Tonali's £100m Spurs move echoes Les Ferdinand's biggest career regret at White Hart Lane

Sandro Tonali completed a move worth up to £100m from Newcastle to Tottenham this summer, reuniting with his former club when Spurs host the Magpies on Saturday. The Italian midfielder was convinced to make the switch after a meeting with head coach Roberto De Zerbi, saying it took him just ten minutes to agree once the two had spoken.

The transfer draws an uncomfortable parallel with Les Ferdinand’s switch along the same route nearly 30 years ago — a move the former striker has described as the worst decision of his football career.

Ferdinand joined Tottenham from Newcastle in 1997 for £6m, despite admitting he had no desire to leave the north east. Speaking in 2019, he recalled how Newcastle manager Kenny Dalglish needed to raise funds and, though Dalglish told him he did not want to lose him, Ferdinand was unconvinced. Liverpool had offered £3.5m, Sheffield Wednesday matched Spurs’ £6m bid, but Ferdinand’s emotional ties proved decisive.

“But I thought if I am going to leave Newcastle, Tottenham were my boyhood club so that was where I was going to go,” Ferdinand said. “I knew the club was in a bit of turmoil at the time, but after speaking with Alan Sugar he utterly convinced me to sign for Tottenham.”

The reality of life at White Hart Lane quickly soured the move. “People go through their careers and say they don’t have regrets, but from a football perspective that was probably the worst decision I made,” Ferdinand explained. “Tottenham were a club in unbelievable turmoil and I didn’t realise how bad it was until I got there. In my first five years, I had four different managers.”

Ferdinand had believed Newcastle were on the verge of winning a major trophy before his departure, and the regret of leaving has stayed with him. He said he would have spent the rest of his career at St James’ Park had circumstances been different.

Tonali’s situation arrives in a very different era and a very different Spurs, with De Zerbi’s appointment generating genuine optimism in north London. Whether the £100m move marks the beginning of a new chapter for both player and club, or echoes Ferdinand’s cautionary tale, will become clearer as the season unfolds.
