Manchester United are pursuing two midfield signings this summer — Atalanta’s Ederson and Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali — but both players would arrive at Old Trafford unable to wear the squad numbers they have long called their own.

TalkSPORT report that United have reached a verbal agreement with Ederson on a five-year contract, with talks between the clubs progressing over a £43 million fee. The Brazilian has one year remaining on his deal with Atalanta, though the Serie A club are standing firm on their valuation. Tonali, meanwhile, has been heavily linked with a move to United in recent months, with Newcastle’s failure to qualify for European football seen as a significant factor in any potential departure. The Magpies are reportedly seeking £86 million for the Italian, and reports in Italy claim United are confident of completing both signings — a combined outlay of around £129 million.

Tonali has worn the number eight shirt since his time at AC Milan, but that number belongs to Bruno Fernandes at United. The club captain has held the No. 8 since the 2022/23 season, having previously worn it at Sporting CP and Udinese, and is considered central to manager Michael Carrick’s plans. Fernandes has been linked with moves away in the past but shows no signs of leaving. The No. 18, vacated following Casemiro’s departure, would be available for Tonali as an alternative.

Ederson has worn the No. 13 throughout his six years at Atalanta, but that number was claimed by Patrick Dorgu when the Danish full-back joined United in the January 2025 window. Dorgu is contracted at Old Trafford until at least 2030. The No. 12 is free following Tyrell Malacia’s confirmed departure, while No. 19 and No. 22 are also vacant, giving Ederson options should he opt for a fresh start.

Carrick is prioritising midfield reinforcements early in the window to address the gap left by Casemiro’s exit and other potential outgoings, with both Tonali and Ederson understood to be high on the club’s list of targets.
