Tillman's stunning free kick seals USA's first World Cup knockout win in 24 years
Malik Tillman scored a Messi-esque free kick to put the USA 2-0 up against Bosnia and Herzegovina, securing the United States' first World Cup knockout round victory since 2002 despite playing 20 minutes with ten men.
Malik Tillman’s curling free kick sealed a 2-0 victory for the United States against Bosnia and Herzegovina at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Wednesday, sending the co-hosts into the next round with their first knockout stage win in nearly a quarter-century.
Tillman, a 24-year-old German-born playmaker, bent his effort over the Bosnian wall and beyond goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj to double the USA’s lead — his first goal on football’s grandest stage. The strike came with the Americans already reduced to ten men, after Folarin Balogun was shown a red card in the second half following a controversial foul. Balogun had earlier broken the deadlock with a goal Tillman helped create.
The moment was all the more remarkable given the circumstances. Tillman’s cleat had been broken and his foot sliced open by a Bosnian challenge, leaving him standing at the post-match microphone in socks — one of them soaked in blood — as he was named player of the game.
“I’m a different type of person,” Tillman said. “On the pitch maybe you don’t really see my emotions.” He made an exception after the free kick, sprinting to the corner flag with arms outstretched as teammates swarmed him. “If you score a goal like this it’s a great feeling. And, of course, a very proud moment for me.”
Midfielder Tyler Adams offered some context on the quietly influential forward. “He’s a very reserved person. I think some people sometimes get it twisted, how nonchalant he is sometimes, that he doesn’t care. He cares so much, and he’s such an important player in the team.”
Tillman’s contribution was the headline act in a match that showcased the collective depth of Mauricio Pochettino’s squad. Balogun leads the tournament with three goals. Christian Pulisic has been a consistent threat, while Weston McKennie and Adams have covered every blade of grass in midfield. At the back, Chris Richards has been among the standout centre-backs at the tournament, and Antonee Robinson and Sergiño Dest have been dynamic on both flanks.
What makes Tillman’s emergence particularly notable is that he was not universally predicted to start. Of the eleven men who began Wednesday’s match, Tillman was the one name absent from most pre-tournament lineup projections — a detail that makes his player-of-the-game performance all the more fitting.
