Manchester United are targeting a major defensive restructure in the 2027 summer window, with the club’s immediate transfer focus this summer directed at midfield reinforcements ahead of their Premier League opener against Hull City on August 22.

According to the Daily Mail, sweeping changes at the back are unlikely to arrive before next year, leaving manager Michael Carrick to navigate a precarious situation in the meantime. Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez all entered the final year of their contracts at midnight on Tuesday, though United retain the option to trigger 12-month extensions for Maguire and Martinez. Shaw, who turns 31 at the end of next week, is expected to have his future resolved before the turn of the year.

The injury picture further complicates matters. Matthijs De Ligt, contracted until 2029, has not featured since late November after undergoing surgery on a back problem, while Manuel Ugarte faces a lengthy absence of his own — a situation that has pushed midfield to the top of United’s summer agenda.

On that front, United are close to completing the signing of Atalanta midfielder Ederson for an initial fee of £35 million, plus £3.8 million in add-ons. The Brazilian represents the club’s most concrete piece of business so far, though Carrick has acknowledged that further midfield additions are required.

United have already missed out on two prominent targets in that area. Mateus Fernandes, who had been on their radar from West Ham, completed a £85 million move to Tottenham Hotspur, with United opting against matching Spurs’ offer given the financial outlay and uncertainty over the player’s preference. England international Elliot Anderson also slipped away, with his £116 million switch from Nottingham Forest to Manchester City confirmed on Thursday.

Carrick has overseen a significant clearout since taking charge, with Jadon Sancho, Casemiro, Tyrell Malacia, Sonny Aljofree, Malachi Sharpe and James Bailey all departing upon the expiry of their contracts as the club continues its rebuild.
