Onana set to rejoin Trabzonspor on loan after United confirm he has no future at Old Trafford
Andre Onana will return to Trabzonspor on a season-long loan within 24 hours after signing paperwork on Thursday. Manchester United could receive up to €1.5m in bonuses, with the Turkish club covering the majority of his wages.
Andre Onana is set to rejoin Trabzonspor on a season-long loan, with the announcement expected within 24 hours after the Cameroonian goalkeeper signed the necessary paperwork on Thursday afternoon. Manchester United and the Turkish Super Lig side agreed the deal last week, with its finalisation delayed only by Onana returning from a holiday around a friend’s wedding.
United will receive no guaranteed fee for the loan but could earn up to €1.5 million (£1.28m) in bonuses, contingent on Trabzonspor winning the domestic league or qualifying for the Champions League. The Turkish club will also cover the majority of Onana’s wages, and United are hopeful that if certain clauses are triggered, full wage coverage for the season could follow.
The deal is structured as a straight loan with no option or obligation to buy, meaning Onana will return to Old Trafford next summer with one year remaining on the contract he signed following his £47 million move from Inter Milan in 2023.
The 30-year-old had a productive spell at Trabzonspor last season, helping the club win the domestic cup and qualify for the Europa League, before returning to United with ambitions of reclaiming a starting role. Those hopes were quickly extinguished. Onana’s representatives were informed by the club that he would not displace first-choice goalkeeper Senne Lammens, and United felt he was overqualified — and too highly paid — to serve as a backup.
With no path to regular football in Manchester, Onana’s preference was to return to a club where he had already built strong relationships and enjoyed tangible success. Trabzonspor, who had welcomed him warmly last season, were the natural destination.
