Carrick braced for swift United axe after 4-1 Europa League humiliation against Como
Manchester United's 4-1 defeat to Como in the Europa League has left Michael Carrick's position in serious doubt, with post-match in-fighting between the manager and Bruno Fernandes deepening the crisis. United's recent history suggests any decision would come within days.
Michael Carrick is facing the sack at Manchester United after a 4-1 Europa League defeat to Como — one of the most embarrassing results in the club’s continental history — was compounded by a public falling-out between the manager and captain Bruno Fernandes.
Fernandes publicly accused Carrick of getting his tactics wrong after the match, while Carrick responded by suggesting the players had not worked hard enough. The open conflict, combined with the scoreline, has left Carrick’s tenure hanging by a thread. His gesture of apology to the travelling United supporters at full time was widely read as an acknowledgement that he may have managed his final game in charge.
If United do move quickly, history suggests Carrick will not be kept waiting long. The club’s decision-makers have consistently acted within 24 to 48 hours of a result that seals a manager’s fate.
Ruben Amorim was notified on a Monday morning, roughly 18 hours after a defeat at Leeds in January, following a tense meeting with then-director of football Jason Wilcox the previous Friday. Erik ten Hag was also dismissed on a Monday, the day after a 2-1 loss to West Ham left United 14th in the Premier League table, with chief executive Omar Berrada and sporting director Dan Ashworth delivering the news.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s exit followed a similar pattern. He later revealed he sensed his time was up at half-time of a 4-1 defeat at Watford — a result that mirrors Wednesday’s scoreline — and was formally dismissed the following day after a meeting with then-executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.
Jose Mourinho was given slightly longer, with his dismissal coming almost two days after a 3-1 defeat to Liverpool. Louis van Gaal was treated more harshly: he was sacked within 24 hours of winning the FA Cup, with Jose Mourinho confirmed as his replacement the following day.
The pattern across six permanent managers points to a club that, once a decision is made, moves fast. Whether United’s hierarchy have already reached that point with Carrick remains to be seen, but the combination of the result, the dressing-room discord, and the manager’s own body language after the final whistle suggests the situation is critical.
