A Segunda División match between Tenerife and Andorra was abandoned deep into stoppage time on Saturday after Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel was kneed in the head by Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono and suffered cardiorespiratory arrest. De Miguel was taken to hospital by ambulance and is currently stable in the ICU at the University Hospital of Nuestra Señora de Candelaria.
The incident occurred in the seventh of eight added minutes, with the score level at 2-2 following a chaotic final half-hour. Owono charged from his goal to clear a long ball and appeared to catch De Miguel flush on the head with his knee, knocking the striker unconscious. The goalkeeper was shown a straight red card — the third dismissal of the match — leaving Andorra with nine men.
Players from both sides gathered around De Miguel as medical staff worked on the pitch, with several Tenerife players visibly in tears. The referee opted to suspend the game rather than play out the remaining minute, and De Miguel was carried off by ambulance.
Tenerife confirmed the severity of the situation in a club statement: “CD Tenerife player Jesus de Miguel is admitted to the ICU at the University Hospital of Nuestra Señora de Candelaria, stable despite the severity of his condition. The medical services at said hospital will be present and will report when there are updates.”
The fixture had already descended into disorder before the final, catastrophic moment. Tenerife had led 2-0 at half-time through goals from Christian Gomis and Enric Gallego, only to be pegged back in the closing stages. Andorra’s Lautaro De Leon converted a penalty in the 83rd minute to make it 2-1, but was immediately sent off after colliding with Tenerife goalkeeper Dani Martin while retrieving the ball.
Martin was then shown a yellow card and a second yellow in rapid succession, cancelling out Tenerife’s numerical advantage within two minutes. Stefan Golubovic equalised for Andorra shortly after to make it 2-2, setting the stage for the incident that ended the match.
The result, whenever it is formally determined, carries real stakes: Tenerife sit four points above relegation-threatened Andorra in the Segunda División table.
