Neville warns United are 'stuck in a rut' but rules out relegation battle after Chelsea defeat
Gary Neville says Manchester United are not yet in a relegation battle despite sitting 17th in the Premier League on goal difference alone, with nine games without a win following a 2-0 loss at Chelsea.
Manchester United sit one place above the Premier League relegation zone on goal difference after a 2-0 defeat at Chelsea, and club legend Gary Neville has warned the situation is “really worrying” — while stopping short of predicting a survival fight.
The result leaves Ruben ten Hag’s side level on points with 18th-placed Crystal Palace and only two ahead of bottom club Sunderland, intensifying scrutiny on manager Michael Carrick and fuelling speculation over another managerial change in the coming weeks.
Neville, reflecting on a run of nine Premier League games without a win — United’s longest such sequence since August — identified a recurring pattern of collapse once the team falls behind. “As soon as they go a goal down they fall to pieces,” he said. “You’ve got to keep your discipline and you’ve got to be able to get through points in a game when your opponents are doing quite well — and Manchester United can’t do that right now.”
Despite the alarm, Neville does not believe the club will ultimately be dragged into a relegation battle. “I don’t think it’s at that stage. I don’t think they will end up there, but it’s a worry. It’s a real depression of results, a depression of performances,” he said.
The former United right-back also highlighted the difficulty of the fixtures ahead. A Europa League trip to Roma is followed by a Premier League home game against an organised Aston Villa side, before a visit to Anfield. “Any team that is organised, that’s got a combination or two about them, will cause Manchester United problems,” Neville added.
“It feels like the club is stuck in a rut,” he concluded. “It’s stuck in a rut in terms of results — nine without a win is obviously a really horrible run to be in at any point.”
