Leeds United mourn Colin Westby, fan of 50 years who collapsed before Manchester United match
Colin Westby, 68, suffered a medical emergency at Elland Road before Leeds' Premier League fixture with Manchester United on 18 October and was placed in a medically-induced coma. Leeds United have confirmed his passing and will honour him in the 68th minute against Tottenham on Saturday.
Leeds United have confirmed the death of supporter Colin Westby, 68, who collapsed at Elland Road approximately 30 minutes before kick-off in the Premier League fixture against Manchester United on 18 October.
Westby required urgent medical attention and was taken to hospital by ambulance, where he was placed in a medically-induced coma. The club confirmed in an official statement that, following a period of unresponsiveness, the decision was made to withdraw life support.
“Leeds United are heartbroken to learn of the passing of supporter Colin Westby at the age of 68,” the club said. “The thoughts of everyone at Leeds United are with Colin’s family and friends at this sad time.”
Westby had held a season ticket at Leeds for 50 years. The club had previously praised the rapid response of stewards and medical staff on the day of the incident.
Leeds will pay tribute to Westby during the 68th minute of their next Premier League home fixture against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday 7 November — the minute chosen to reflect his age.
Marching Out Together, the official fan group for Leeds’ LGBTQ+ supporters, also paid tribute, describing Westby as a “friend of our MOuT family.” “We were so sorry to hear of the passing of Colin Westby, a Leeds fan for 50+ years,” the group said in a statement. “Love and light to all who were with him that day, and above all to his family and friends.”
