Sunderland's €30m bid for Paixão forces OM into painful decision

Sunderland has submitted a €30 million offer to Olympique de Marseille for Igor Paixão, placing the French club facing a choice it did not wish to make before the transfer window closes.

For several months, the question seemed settled. Since May, the 26-year-old Brazilian winger had repeatedly expressed internally his attachment to the Marseille project and his refusal to leave this summer. But the prospect of playing in the Premier League has shifted his position: according to available information, Paixão believes a spell in the English championship would maximize his chances of joining the Seleção. Aston Villa and several Saudi clubs have also expressed interest, but Sunderland has been the most aggressive, after facing several rejections for proposals deemed insufficient by Marseille’s management.

Paixão’s absence from collective training on Tuesday afternoon, officially unexplained, has strengthened the feeling of an imminent transfer within the club.

The situation creates a visible rift in OM’s organizational structure. Head coach Bruno Genesio and sporting director Grégory Lorenzi are firmly opposed to a departure, viewing the Brazilian — 12 goals and 8 assists last season — as a central element of their attacking play. On the other side, American ownership and the financial department see Sunderland’s €30 million as an opportunity to rebalance fragile accounts, particularly after the failures of the Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Nayef Aguerd deals.

OM must now choose between sporting consistency and economic constraints, in the final days of an already tense transfer window.
