Kane eyes Ronaldo's consecutive-scoring record as Bayern face Arsenal in Champions League

Harry Kane enters Bayern Munich's Champions League tie against Arsenal needing just two more consecutive scoring appearances to match Cristiano Ronaldo's all-time record of 11 straight competitive games with a goal. The England captain, already the leading English scorer in Champions League history, is also the frontrunner for the 2026 Ballon d'Or.

Harry Kane arrives at Bayern Munich’s Champions League group-stage fixture against Arsenal needing goals in two more consecutive matches to equal Cristiano Ronaldo’s record of scoring in 11 straight competitive appearances. The England captain is currently on a nine-game run and, with 15 goals in 22 career appearances against Arsenal, the timing could hardly be more pointed.

The match carries additional personal significance for Kane, who spent time in Arsenal’s academy as an eight-year-old before going on to become one of the Premier League era’s defining strikers. He now returns as the man most likely to be named the best player on the planet, with the 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony scheduled for Monday evening in London — five days after this fixture.

Kane’s case for the Golden Ball is built on extraordinary numbers. He scored 73 goals for club and country across the 2025-26 campaign, a tally surpassed in a single season this century only by Lionel Messi’s 82 in 2011-12. Last week, he also overtook a separate Messi benchmark, becoming the outright leading scorer in Champions League history among players aged 30 or over. Messi had accumulated 35 goals in the competition after turning 30; Kane now has 36.

His overall Champions League tally stands at 57 goals, placing him eighth on the all-time list and level with Bayern legend Thomas Müller. He is the highest-scoring English player in the competition’s history, the first Englishman to score in seven consecutive Champions League matches, and holds the record for most Champions League goals by an English player in a single season — 14 in 2025-26.

Kane was not called upon for Bayern’s pre-match media duties ahead of the Arsenal tie, a deliberate choice that reflects his preference to let performances speak for themselves. Team-mate Serge Gnabry offered an insight into what drives him: “He always has the right mindset, always goes forward, always leads.”

Off the pitch, Kane is also set to commit his long-term future to Bayern Munich, with reports indicating he is preparing to sign a contract extension through to the summer of 2029.
