Sterling challenges Silva to December title eliminator to settle featherweight No. 1 contender debate

Aljamain Sterling is pushing for a December showdown with Jean Silva to determine the undisputed No. 1 featherweight title contender, after Silva’s knockout of Jose Miguel Delgado in the main event of Noche UFC reignited the division’s contender picture.

Silva made it two consecutive finishes with the win over Delgado and immediately called for a shot at the winner of the featherweight title fight between Alexander Volkanovski and Movsar Evloev at UFC 333. Sterling, himself on a two-fight winning streak, initially responded by challenging Silva to settle the matter at Madison Square Garden in November. After further reflection, however, the former bantamweight champion shifted his preferred timeline to December, reasoning that the extra time would ensure both fighters are fully prepared.

“Even if it’s a Fight Night, I don’t give a f*ck,” Sterling said on his YouTube channel. “December, run that shit. I want to give him the fair opportunity to heal, be ready, be the best version of himself, and I would love to have that fight.”

Sterling, who is 37, framed the call-out in terms of urgency and strategic logic. He noted that if Evloev were to win the title, the division could stall for months due to Ramadan, making a Sterling-Silva eliminator the most sensible path forward.

“I want to fight the fights that make the most sense; the biggest names, the fights that get me somewhere,” Sterling said. “I’m 37. It’s time to shit or get off the pot. We both stay busy, stay active, and get a clear-cut No. 1 contender for the title. I don’t think it’s rocket science, at all.”

Silva has not formally accepted the challenge but has not dismissed it either, responding to Sterling’s initial callout with trash talk rather than a flat refusal. Silva also disclosed several injuries sustained in the build-up to Noche UFC that may require recovery time before he can commit to a date.

Sterling, for his part, expressed full confidence in his ability to handle Silva’s much-discussed finishing power. “I know they had the ‘Beware of Dog’ signs, but I got something for that,” he said. “I like to think my style is the ultimate equalizer. Just like they talk about power, I got something else.”

With the featherweight title picture hinging on the Volkanovski-Evloev outcome at UFC 333, a Sterling-Silva eliminator in December would give the division a clear contender ready to step in regardless of who holds the belt.
