Stassin leaves Saint-Étienne for Seville on loan with €25m option

Lucas Stassin is on his way to Seville. The 21-year-old Belgian striker will leave AS Saint-Étienne as part of a paid loan worth €2.5 million, coupled with a non-mandatory purchase option estimated at €25 million, according to L’Équipe.

The player has already been authorized to travel to Andalusia to finalize the last details of his contract with the Spanish club. His absence during the trip to Dijon on Monday evening — a 3-2 victory for the Greens in Ligue 2 — had been officially attributed to illness, but the deal now appears to be well advanced.

If FC Seville were to exercise the purchase option, Saint-Étienne would also receive 20% of any profit generated from a potential future resale of the player, a clause that could prove highly lucrative for the Saint-Étienne club.

Questioned after the victory in Dijon, manager Ian Cathro played down knowledge of the matter. “You are surely better informed than I am. I have no information regarding Lucas Stassin,” he said. “I can understand that you might think there are coincidences between this absence and the end of the transfer window, but what I can tell you is that he hasn’t trained in recent sessions — he was ill. That’s why he wasn’t in the squad today.”

Arriving at Saint-Étienne last summer from Beerschot, Stassin had quickly confirmed his potential in Ligue 2. His transfer to La Liga represents a significant financial operation for a Saint-Étienne club in full reconstruction.
