Semenyo faces eight weeks out as Maresca admits Man City feared worse knee injury
Manchester City winger Antoine Semenyo will miss approximately eight weeks after sustaining a knee injury against Ipswich Town, ruling him out of fixtures against Aston Villa, Brighton, and a string of November matches. Manager Enzo Maresca said initial scans suggested a more serious problem than the one diagnosed.
Antoine Semenyo will be sidelined for around eight weeks after suffering a knee injury as a late substitute in Manchester City’s Premier League fixture against Ipswich Town last Saturday, manager Enzo Maresca has confirmed. The Ghana international winger had started six of City’s seven Premier League matches this season before the setback.
Maresca, speaking to reporters ahead of City’s Champions League win over AEK Athens, said the club had braced for a worse diagnosis before scans provided some relief. “The rest are more or less okay. The only one that will be out for probably eight weeks is Antoine,” Maresca said. “In the first moment we expected an even worse injury so we were more worried. After yesterday’s scan we feel much better because it’s not so big like we expected. When he is back around December it will be like a new player in terms of energy.”
The 26-year-old’s absence will be felt immediately. Semenyo will miss Saturday’s Premier League lunchtime fixture against Aston Villa, as well as back-to-back Carabao Cup and Premier League games against Brighton & Hove Albion. He would also have been in contention for Ghana’s November international break call-up.
City’s schedule during his absence includes Premier League and Champions League matches against RB Leipzig, Nottingham Forest, Fulham, Napoli, and Arsenal. Maresca will hope to have Semenyo available again when December fixtures against Leeds United, Brentford, Barcelona, and Chelsea come around.
The winger had been one of City’s more productive attacking outlets this season, registering two goals and three assists in the Premier League and starting both of the club’s previous Champions League league-phase matches against Porto and PSG.
Maresca did offer more positive news regarding striker Erling Haaland, who also picked up a knock against Ipswich but was fit enough to be named on the bench against AEK Athens. Phil Foden stole the headlines in that fixture, scoring a hat-trick in a dominant 5-1 win, while 17-year-old Floyd Samba made his second senior appearance for the club.
