Haaland fit to face Aston Villa after Champions League absence, but City face selection dilemma
Erling Haaland missed Manchester City's Champions League win over AEK Athens with a knock sustained against Ipswich, but has been declared fit ahead of City's Premier League clash with in-form Aston Villa.
Erling Haaland has been declared fit for Manchester City’s Premier League meeting with Aston Villa after sitting out the midweek Champions League victory over AEK Athens as a precaution.
The Norwegian striker picked up a knock during City’s win over Ipswich Town last Saturday and was kept on the bench as a precaution while his side ran out comfortable winners against the Greek club. His return comes at a critical moment for Pep Guardiola’s side, who face a Villa team that has won six of their last seven league games.
Haaland’s fitness is particularly significant given the attacking options available to City. Antoine Semenyo’s long-term absence further underlines how central the striker is to City’s attacking output, leaving the club with little margin for error if they choose to manage his minutes.
The key question now is whether City risk starting Haaland from the first whistle or ease him back from the bench. Playing a full 90 minutes so soon after a knock carries its own risks, but so does leaving one of the Premier League’s most dangerous forwards out of the starting lineup against a side in such strong form.
Haaland’s availability will be a significant factor in City’s preparations, with the fixture against Villa shaping up as one of the more demanding tests of their domestic campaign so far this season.
