Man City face fine, points deduction, title stripping or expulsion after guilty verdict
An independent commission found Manchester City guilty of 114 breaches of Premier League financial rules, including artificially inflating revenues by £900 million between 2009/10 and 2017/18. The club have appealed, but four potential punishments remain on the table.
Manchester City face four possible sanctions — ranging from a financial penalty to outright expulsion — after an independent commission found them guilty of 114 breaches of Premier League financial rules, covering a period from the 2009/10 season to 2017/18.
The tribunal determined that City artificially inflated their revenues by £900 million through what it described as ‘sham’ sponsorship contracts designed to disguise the true source of funding and circumvent the league’s profit and sustainability regulations. The club have launched a formal appeal against the verdict, which stands as one of the most serious regulatory failures in English football history.
Financial penalty
The first potential sanction is a multi-million-pound fine imposed directly by the Premier League. Pundits including Martin Keown have suggested a significant financial penalty is possible, though critics argue that a monetary punishment alone would be far too lenient given the scale of the violations and the competitive disadvantage caused to rival clubs.
Points deduction
The second option is a substantial points deduction applied during a future Premier League campaign. Reports have indicated that a historic penalty could be structured to effectively guarantee City’s automatic relegation to the Championship, with a so-called double-wave deduction also mooted — one that would keep the club in the second tier for at least two consecutive seasons.
Title stripping
The third possible punishment is the removal of Premier League titles won during the period under investigation. Gary Neville is among those who have publicly advocated for stripping the club’s silverware from the record books, though notably without awarding those titles to the runners-up. Such a move would cast a shadow over City’s four consecutive league championships and prompt difficult questions for players such as Kyle Walker about the status of their medals.
Expulsion
The fourth and most severe sanction would be the complete expulsion of Manchester City from the Premier League — ejecting the club from the top flight entirely. This outcome is considered the most catastrophic scenario and would have far-reaching consequences for the club’s squad, commercial operations, and long-term future.
With City’s appeal ongoing, rival clubs are bracing for a drawn-out process. Reports suggest many in the Premier League are already frustrated at the pace of proceedings and are unlikely to be satisfied by anything short of a significant sporting punishment.
