Mohamed Salah’s first start for Trabzonspor ended in a 1-0 defeat at Papara Park on Thursday, as Hungarian champions Ferencvaros secured a first-leg advantage in their UEFA Europa League play-off tie. The result leaves the Turkish club facing the prospect of dropping into the Conference League ahead of next week’s return fixture in Budapest.

Having made his debut off the bench in a Super Lig fixture against Kasimpasa the previous weekend, Salah was handed a full start and deployed in his customary position on the right flank. He showed glimpses of his trademark quality — most notably a curling effort that tested the goalkeeper early in the second half — but Trabzonspor’s dominance in possession and a superior Expected Goals (xG) tally ultimately counted for nothing against a disciplined Ferencvaros side.

The visitors were clinical when their opportunity arrived, and former Bristol City and Cardiff City winger Callum O’Dowda featured on the same flank as Salah throughout the contest. Ferencvaros now travel back to Hungary with a one-goal cushion and as clear favourites to reach the Europa League league phase.

The stakes for Trabzonspor extend well beyond pride. Clubs that reach the Europa League’s main stage receive a guaranteed baseline fee of approximately €4.3 million, supplemented by broadcast revenues and performance bonuses. Should Trabzonspor fail to overturn the deficit next Thursday and drop into the Conference League, that figure falls to roughly €3.17 million, with significantly reduced television market pool payments on top.

For a club that invested substantially to bring one of football’s most decorated forwards to Türkiye, the financial gap between the two competitions is a consequence they can ill afford. Salah and Trabzonspor will need a result in Budapest to protect both their European ambitions and their commercial position heading into the season.
