Rosberg warns championship leader Antonelli that F1 title 'demons' cost him his final four races

Nico Rosberg has cautioned Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli, who leads the drivers' championship by 53 points, that the psychological weight of a title challenge can erode performance — drawing on his own experience of a mentally 'fried' brain during the run-in to his 2016 crown.

Nico Rosberg has warned Kimi Antonelli that the mental burden of leading a Formula 1 championship can strip a driver of the ability to perform, speaking ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix as the young Mercedes driver sits 53 points clear at the top of the standings with 224 points.

Rosberg, who claimed the 2016 title before retiring just days later, drew directly on his own experience to illustrate the psychological trap that awaits any driver who begins to sense the championship is within reach.

“Antonelli has driven so incredibly well — it’s a world-class level,” Rosberg said. “It’s his second year in F1, unbelievable. However, he’s only human. Anybody in his situation, as the season goes on, you start to reflect ‘my goodness, my dream is within reach’ and the demons in your head tell you ‘you better not mess this up, it’s yours to lose’ — and that repeats and gets louder and louder.”

The German was candid about how those intrusive thoughts ultimately compromised his own driving during the final stretch of his title-winning season against Lewis Hamilton.

“Once you think about those things, it takes capacity away from your ability to drive at 100%,” he continued. “I went through that big time and that’s why the last four races in my day, there was no chance for me to do a pole position or win a race. I could not. My brain was fried.”

Antonelli, in only his second season in Formula 1, has already made history as the youngest driver to lead the drivers’ championship — a milestone Rosberg acknowledged with genuine admiration before delivering his caution.

Hamilton, Antonelli’s own Mercedes team-mate, sits second in the standings on 171 points, with George Russell third on 168. The closeness of that battle behind him means any slip from Antonelli could rapidly tighten the title race, adding further weight to Rosberg’s warning about the psychological pressures that lie ahead.
