Cristiano Ronaldo has been suspended on a precautionary basis by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF). The Disciplinary Council announced on October 9, 2026, the opening of disciplinary proceedings against the five-time Ballon d’Or winner, following his unauthorized departure from the national team training camp in Copenhagen, Denmark, on October 7.

In its statement, the FPF clarified that “without prejudice to the automatic precautionary suspension to which he was subject until the date of opening of the proceedings, the non-automatic precautionary suspension of the player has been imposed and the urgent nature of the proceedings has been retained.” The file was transmitted on October 10 to the Disciplinary Instruction Commission, with a ban on publication until the conclusion of the investigation.

The incident stems from a Ligue des Nations match. According to available information, Ronaldo took poorly to his coach Jorge Jesus’s decision to have him warm up without bringing him into the game, despite Jesus allegedly promising him thirty minutes of playing time. Portugal’s all-time leading goalscorer then left the gathering without authorization.

Ronaldo must now answer for his actions before the federation’s disciplinary bodies. The outcome of the proceedings, declared urgent, will determine the definitive length of his suspension and any consequences for his availability with the national team.
