Carragher brands Morgan a 'sycophant' in bitter Ronaldo walkout row
Jamie Carragher and Piers Morgan have traded sharp personal attacks on social media after Morgan defended Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal walkout, with Carragher accusing Morgan and Rio Ferdinand of letting their friendship with Ronaldo cloud their judgment.
Jamie Carragher has branded Piers Morgan a ‘sycophant’ and an ‘absolute phoney’ in a fierce public exchange sparked by Cristiano Ronaldo’s walkout from the Portugal squad and the media debate that followed.
The row began after Morgan and former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand publicly backed Ronaldo following his reported dispute with Portugal coach Jorge Jesus. Carragher, speaking on The Overlap Daily, argued that their personal ties to Ronaldo were distorting their analysis.
“People like Piers Morgan and Rio Ferdinand, who are big people in the media whether you like them or not, are embarrassing themselves with the nonsense that they’re coming out with because they know Ronaldo,” Carragher said. “You can know someone and try to look after them, but you cannot defend the indefensible.”
Morgan responded on social media by pointing to Carragher’s past defence of former Liverpool teammate Luis Suarez following Suarez’s racial abuse of Patrice Evra, and also referenced his own 2018 support for Carragher during the pundit’s spitting controversy — framing it as a case of Carragher doing the same thing he was now criticising.
Carragher fired back directly, acknowledging the Suarez episode but insisting he had since apologised to Evra publicly, which he said prompted Liverpool to send Evra a formal letter of apology as well. He then turned the focus back on Morgan’s motives.
“Your reaction to my slight criticism saying you and Rio are in bed with Ronaldo so it clouds your judgement when speaking about him is embarrassing,” Carragher wrote. “You batter people every day, when it’s the other way you storm out of a tv studio or get personal. All to get another interview you sycophant.”
On Morgan’s 2018 defence of him during the spitting incident, Carragher added a pointed revelation: “I contacted you to say I appreciated your support, you then tried to get me on your tv show to talk about it, so my appreciation waned a bit as I knew it wasn’t as sincere as I first thought. It was all about an interview, as is your possessive fawning over Ronaldo and Trump.”
Carragher closed with a warning that he could go further but was choosing not to: “I also wouldn’t be getting personal with your history or the other two you’re defending — now that would be defending the indefensible.”
