Rice, Bellingham and two more England stars one booking from World Cup semi-final ban
Four England players — Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham, Nico O'Reilly and Marc Guehi — are one yellow card away from missing a potential semi-final, joining 13 other international stars on the disciplinary tightrope heading into the quarter-finals.
Four England players are among 17 international stars facing an automatic suspension for the World Cup semi-finals if they pick up a booking in the quarter-finals, with Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham, Nico O’Reilly and Marc Guehi all carrying a yellow card into the last eight.
Under the official regulations for the expanded World Cup, any player who receives two cautions before the quarter-finals is handed an automatic one-match ban. Bookings were wiped after the group stage and will be cleared again after the quarter-finals, meaning a card collected in the semis carries no risk of a final suspension — but the window between now and that reset is the danger zone.
England head into their quarter-final against Norway on Saturday night in confident mood after a 3-2 victory over Mexico, yet Thomas Tuchel faces a significant disciplinary headache. Rice, the Arsenal midfielder who anchors England’s midfield and regularly breaks up opposition attacks, must be careful with his challenges. Bellingham, whose partnership with Harry Kane has been central to England’s progress, is equally at risk. O’Reilly, the young Manchester City player enjoying a breakout tournament, and Crystal Palace defender Guehi complete the English contingent on the list.
The concern stretches well beyond England’s camp. Morocco have four players on the warning list — defender Achraf Hakimi, Issa Diop, Bilal El Khannouss and Redouane Halhal — while Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka is also one caution away from a ban. In total, 17 players across the tournament are walking the same disciplinary tightrope as the competition enters its most critical phase.
The full list of players at risk of a World Cup semi-final suspension includes: Issa Diop, Achraf Hakimi, Bilal El Khannouss and Redouane Halhal (Morocco); Nico O’Reilly, Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham and Marc Guehi (England); and Granit Xhaka (Switzerland), among others across the remaining quarter-final nations.
