Klopp and Slot set for Nations League collision as both target national team roles
Jurgen Klopp is reportedly set to take charge of Germany while Arne Slot is in talks to replace Ronald Koeman as Netherlands head coach — a combination that could pit the former Liverpool managers against each other in the Nations League on September 24.
Jurgen Klopp and Arne Slot, the two most recent managers of Liverpool, could face each other as international head coaches as early as September, with Germany and the Netherlands scheduled to meet in the Nations League on the 24th of that month.
Klopp’s return to management has been triggered by Julian Nagelsmann’s departure as Germany boss. The 59-year-old is reportedly set to take charge of Die Mannschaft as the German FA looks to rebuild following the country’s elimination from the World Cup at the hands of Paraguay.
Slot, who succeeded Klopp at Anfield, is said to be in talks to replace Ronald Koeman as Netherlands head coach after the Oranje were knocked out of the World Cup in the last 32 on penalties against Morocco. Koeman stepped down on June 30, and Slot is reportedly positioning himself to guide the Netherlands to their first major international honour since Euro 1988.
Slot was relieved of his duties at Liverpool on May 30 after a turbulent second season in which the club lost 20 matches across all competitions, despite his debut campaign having delivered the club’s 20th league title — the highest win rate of any manager in Liverpool’s history.
The prospect of the two men meeting on the touchline carries a certain symmetry. Klopp was among Slot’s most vocal supporters ahead of the Dutchman’s appointment at Anfield, describing him as a “good guy” and praising his attacking philosophy. Slot, in turn, was generous in acknowledging the platform his predecessor had built.
“So many moments in the season the two of us have had contact. I think he showed last season what a wonderful human being he is by introducing me,” Slot said following Liverpool’s title win. “But what mattered most is the team he left.”
Should both appointments be confirmed, the Nations League fixture in September would mark the first competitive meeting between the pair — a reunion that neither could have anticipated when Klopp handed over the keys at Anfield just over a year ago.
