Rennes held to goalless draw at Graz in Ligue Europa opener
Stade Rennais failed to win away at Sturm Graz on Wednesday (0-0) in the first matchday of Ligue Europa. A goal by Thomasson was ruled out by VAR, extending Franck Haise's winless run to 17 matches in European competition.
Stade Rennais shared the points with Sturm Graz on Wednesday evening at Stadion Graz-Liebenau (0-0) in their opening match of the Ligue Europa league phase. A frustrating result that leaves the Bretons without a win in their 17th match in the competition.
Rennes thought they had taken the lead as early as the 8th minute through Anouar Thomasson, but VAR ruled out the goal for a prior handball. The Austrians also saw a goal disallowed, this time for offside in the 35th minute, in a first half where both teams neutralized each other without ever truly breaking the deadlock.
This goalless draw compounds a particularly heavy European record for Franck Haise since taking charge of Rennes: 5 draws and 12 defeats in Ligue Europa, still no victories. Momentum remains to be built for a club that must quickly find its footing in this unprecedented league phase.
The Rennes XI fielded by Haise: Samba — Reynolds, Cresswell, Rouault, Nagida — Szymanski, Thomasson, Camara — Blas, Lepaul, Al Tamari.
