Martinez reveals France 2022 inspired him with more respect than Spain in 2026
Known for his provocations towards the French team since the 2022 World Cup final, Emiliano Martinez surprised by admitting that the France squad inspired him with more respect than Spain, the victorious finalists in 2026.
Emiliano Martinez has reversed his verbal stance towards the France team. In an interview granted Friday to journalist Gaston Edul, the Argentine goalkeeper at Chelsea confided that the Bleus, defending champions in 2022, inspired him with « the most respect » at the time — far more than Spain, who ultimately defeated the Albiceleste in the 2026 World Cup final (0-1).
« As a team, France inspired me with the most respect in 2022 because they had been world champions and had more experience. I held them in greater respect », Martinez declared. An unexpected admission from a player who has become one of the bêtes noires of French supporters since his decisive performance against Randal Kolo Muani in extra time of the Qatar final, and his repeated provocations in the weeks that followed.
The target of his barbs seems to have now changed. Asked about the defeat against La Roja in 2026, « Dibu » displayed unshaken confidence: « I knew Spain was very strong, but I don’t know… If we had to face them again, I feel like we would beat them. » The provocative tone remained, but it is clearly oriented towards Madrid rather than Paris.
At 34 years old, Martinez has moreover been sidelined since October 17 and a match between Chelsea and Everton, due to a jaw fracture requiring surgery. He is expected to remain unavailable for at least three additional weeks.
