Rejected by Chelsea at 14, Michael Olise Returns as an International Star
After being cut from Chelsea's academy and failing to establish himself at Manchester City, Michael Olise developed at Reading before becoming one of Europe's best chance creators at Bayern Munich. A documentary traces this remarkable journey.
Michael Olise is completing one of European football’s most striking full circles: the Bayern Munich and France winger, born in London, has been confirmed as Chelsea’s new signing — the club that released him from its academy at age 14.
The statistics tell the story better than anything else: 62 goals and 60 assists in 143 matches across all competitions with Bayern Munich, where he arrived from Crystal Palace two years ago. A technically gifted left-footer and exceptional chance creator, Olise has established himself as one of Harry Kane’s most valuable partners in the Bavarian attack.
Yet nothing was predetermined. Sean Conlon, one of his first coaches at a local club in west London, describes Olise’s departure from Chelsea shrouded in mystery: “What happened there remained very private. Nobody really knows. Only a few Chelsea executives. I get the sense there was some kind of friction.” The club’s academy staff apparently lacked patience with a player of singular mentality, despite being consumed by football.
After Chelsea, Olise tried his luck at Manchester City’s academy, but struggled to adapt away from home — too physically slight at the time. Six months without a club followed before Reading opened its doors to him. It was in this town west of Greater London that he completed his development between 2017 and 2019, then began his Championship career over two seasons (73 matches, 7 goals), being named in the second division’s team of the year in 2020-2021, just before his transfer to Crystal Palace.
His choice to wear France’s blue shirt rather than England’s is explained by this journey: his mother, of French-Algerian origin, instilled in him a genuine attachment to the Bleus, and his early departure from Chelsea deprived him of English youth selections that could have definitively committed him to the Three Lions. Now a France international, Olise returns to Chelsea not as a sidelined teenager, but as one of the summer transfer window’s most anticipated signings.
