OM Sale: Valuation Cut in Half, Signs Mount
Valued at €1.2 billion a year ago, Olympique de Marseille could now be sold for around €600 million. Statements from Bruno Genesio and Adidas's return fuel speculation about an imminent change of ownership.
Olympique de Marseille’s valuation has reportedly been cut in half in the space of a year. After internally valuing the club at €1.2 billion, Frank McCourt is now reportedly considering a sale around €600 million, according to information that has emerged in recent weeks.
This figure, never officially confirmed, reflects a more difficult sporting and financial reality for the Marseille club. The question remains: can OM find a buyer at this price in such an uncertain context? Nothing is less certain, and yet the signals favoring an imminent sale continue to accumulate.
The latest came, inadvertently, from Bruno Genesio. At a press conference, the Marseille manager revealed he had obtained guarantees on the medium term from sporting director Greg Lorenzi and president Stéphane Richard. “I needed to get the message that we weren’t working on the short term but also next season. I wanted to know the medium-term vision of the new management and the club so that OM regains a status that suits it,” he said.
These assurances, obtained in a climate of difficult results, intrigued local observers. “I don’t want to add another piece to the club sale rumor mill, but how did we go from the deepest depression to such great confidence in the club’s future?” wondered journalist Guillaume Dacquet.
Ten years after Frank McCourt’s purchase of the club from Margarita Louis-Dreyfus in 2016, OM appears to be going through a pivotal period. Several partnership contracts are being renegotiated or renewed. The confirmed return of Adidas as kit supplier has particularly fueled discussions, with some seeing it as a sign of structural recovery — or of putting the club in better shape before a sale.
