Referee Eric Wattellier warned LOSC players before granting the extra stoppage-time minute that allowed PSG to equalize 2-2 on Friday evening at Stade Pierre-Mauroy. Footage from the official’s “refcam”, released on Sunday, supports his decision and puts the controversy that erupted at the final whistle into perspective.

Context: Lille led 2-0 at the start of stoppage time in this opening clash of Matchday 2 of Ligue 1. The referee had initially announced three minutes of additional play, but it was in the 95th minute that Vitinha and then Marquinhos rescued Paris from defeat. An outcome that triggered the anger of Lille captain Benjamin André: “I can understand him wanting to add 30 seconds, 40 seconds, but another minute? That’s what tips the match.”

The refcam footage, however, tells a different story. It shows Wattellier addressing Turkish goalkeeper Berke Özer directly, who remained on the ground after an aerial challenge: “Please, get up or we add an extra minute.” The referee insists: “If you don’t want another minute, get up!” Moments later, left-back Romain Perraud receives a yellow card for time-wasting, further proof that Lille players were aware of the consequences of their clock management.

The extra minute awarded to PSG was therefore not an arbitrary decision made in the heat of the moment: it had been announced, and the referee’s warnings are now documented. Cruel for LOSC, the extension of stoppage time nonetheless remains justified under the rules.
