Paris Saint-Germain has established itself as the undisputed leader of the Champions League league phase after three matchdays. On Tuesday evening, Luis Enrique’s side dominated FC Barcelona 4-2 at Parc des Princes, confirming their success from the previous week against Manchester City, achieved by the same scoreline.

The match against the Catalans could have taken a different turn. Pegged back twice by a resilient Barça, the Parisians ultimately sealed the deal thanks to two goals scored in quick succession in the final five minutes of the match. A brilliant finish that illustrates the mental strength of the Paris squad this season.

These performances immediately prompted statistical models to react. Opta’s supercomputer now gives PSG an 88.45% chance of finishing in the Top 8 and accessing the last 16 directly, without going through the playoffs. Football Meets Data is even more optimistic: the institute projects Paris in first place in the overall standings with an expected 19.4 points, putting their chances of direct qualification at 93.5% and their presence in the Top 24 at 99.99%.

This flying start also fuels title ambitions. According to Opta, the probability of PSG winning the competition has risen from 7.1% at the start of the campaign to 9.44% today. Arsenal (21.10%) and Bayern Munich (15.80%) nevertheless remain the favorites.

In the race for the Top 8, PSG is ahead of dense competition. Despite their defeat at Parc des Princes, FC Barcelona remains well-positioned, with 77.7% chance of direct qualification according to Football Meets Data. Real Madrid is close behind the Parisians in second place (88.7%), followed by Liverpool (77.1%) and Arsenal (76.8%). Further down the virtual standings, Bayern Munich (51.1%), Manchester City (41.2%) and Aston Villa (40.0%) complete this provisional Top 8.

The outlook is far grimmer for the other two French representatives. RC Lens sits in 26th place with only 4.3% chance of making the Top 8 and 54.4% of reaching the Top 24. The situation is even more worrying for LOSC, stuck in 27th position with 1.9% chance of direct qualification and a high risk of elimination in the league phase.
