Wilshere pushes Barnsley manager Stendel in touchline melee after Luton's 2-1 win
Jack Wilshere shoved Barnsley boss Daniel Stendel during a post-match handshake following Luton's 2-1 League One victory on Tuesday, sparking a touchline melee involving players and coaching staff from both sides.
Jack Wilshere clashed with Barnsley manager Daniel Stendel in a heated touchline confrontation after Luton’s 2-1 League One win over the Tykes on Tuesday night, shoving the German coach away during what began as a post-match handshake.
The bad blood had been building throughout the game, most notably after Barnsley’s Amani Richards was booked for diving late on when the winger believed he had been fouled for a penalty. Wilshere and Stendel exchanged words on the touchline over the incident, and tensions carried over into the final whistle.
In scenes that drew comparisons to the infamous Thomas Tuchel–Antonio Conte handshake row, Wilshere recoiled and pushed Stendel away before pointing at him. Coaching staff from both sides quickly intervened, with Luton goalkeeping coach Kevin Pilkington moving in close to Stendel, and players from both teams were drawn into the melee before it eventually cooled.
Wilshere was measured when asked about the incident afterwards. “They want to win, we want to win,” he told the BBC. “I have massive respect for them and what they’re trying to do. We got the win in the end and it got a bit heated but we shake hands in the end and everyone moves on. Sometimes you see how together we are — we’re all together. We’re respectful but also it shows everyone that we are together.”
Stendel sought to minimise the confrontation. “It was a misunderstanding between me and Jack Wilshere,” the Barnsley manager said. “I tried to talk with him after the game and I think it’s not a big thing.”
The result leaves Luton in 13th place in League One, while Barnsley drop to 22nd following a fifth consecutive defeat in all competitions. Stendel made three half-time substitutions and was openly critical of his side’s first-half display. “We cannot accept the performance like in the first half,” he said. “The atmosphere before the game in the locker room was so positive, and after one minute we conceded from a set piece. The desire to defend headers was not there, and the second goal was the same. It was really frustrating and I was a little bit louder at half-time.”
The pressure on Stendel continues to mount as Barnsley search for a way out of the relegation zone.
