Reece James set to miss England's World Cup clash with Mexico through hamstring strain
Reece James is not expected to join England's final training session before their World Cup Round of 16 tie against co-hosts Mexico at the Azteca Stadium, all but ruling the Chelsea right-back out with a hamstring strain.
Reece James looks set to miss England’s World Cup Round of 16 clash against co-hosts Mexico at the Azteca Stadium after the Chelsea right-back was not expected to take part in the squad’s final training session on Saturday in Mexico City.
James has been sidelined since England’s 0-0 draw with Ghana in Boston, having picked up a hamstring strain. Head coach Thomas Tuchel had expressed cautious optimism that James might recover in time, but that hope has all but faded with the tie now less than 24 hours away. The Times report that James is not yet fit enough to train with his team-mates.
England’s right-back options have been stretched further by a separate injury to Jarrel Quansah, who rolled his ankle against Panama in New Jersey. Quansah had stepped in for James following the initial injury but then left the field himself, and both players missed the 2-1 Round of 32 victory over DR Congo in Atlanta.
There is more positive news on the Quansah front, however, with the defender hoped to return to training with the group on Saturday, potentially giving Tuchel at least one fit option at right-back ahead of the Azteca showdown.
