Kylian Mbappe paused his warm-up routine before France’s World Cup last-16 tie against Paraguay after a wayward shot cleared the bar and struck a supporter in the crowd. The Real Madrid forward immediately moved to the edge of the pitch to lean over the boundary and check the fan was unharmed.

The incident drew attention not only for the accidental strike but for Mbappe’s swift response. Even with a place in the quarter-finals at stake, the 25-year-old did not hesitate to break from preparation and ensure the supporter was okay before returning to his warm-up.

Mbappe arrives at the fixture in prolific form, having scored six goals in his opening four matches of the tournament. He trails Lionel Messi by one goal in the race for the Golden Boot, with Harry Kane and Erling Haaland a further goal back — all four players still active in the knockout rounds.

Despite the individual milestone within reach, Mbappe has been clear about where his priorities lie. “No. No, no, no. I think the aim is to go as far as possible. To make it to 19th July, to come back here and try to win it,” he said ahead of the match.

“We are taking it step by step. Of course, the more goals you score, the higher you climb towards glory. But on top of that, I am convinced that Leo is going to score more goals. So, I do not pay too much attention to that. I focus more on the opponents we might face, and how close we are getting to our target, which is the final.”

France coach Didier Deschamps has warned his squad against underestimating Paraguay, who eliminated Germany in the previous round on penalties after Julio Enciso’s opener was cancelled out by Kai Havertz in normal time.

“I’ve watched Paraguay: what they have achieved is no accident,” Deschamps said. “It is a typical South American team, strong in the duels and very tenacious, and they also have players of great quality. No team reaches the last 16 of the World Cup by chance.”
