Redpath compares Bath's Carreras to Pogba after stunning one-handed interception try

Cam Redpath has compared Bath and Argentina back Santi Carreras to Paul Pogba, describing the playmaker as the most fluid rugby player he has ever encountered, following Carreras’s stunning interception try in Bath’s opening-night Premiership win at Harlequins on Friday, 25 September.

Defending a two-on-one inside his own 22, Carreras chose to stick out a boot to intercept Tyrone Green’s pass rather than risk a knock-on and a near-certain yellow card. He then scooped the ball one-handed out of the air while barely staying in play, before racing clear to score a try that has since been viewed 900,000 times on social media.

Redpath revealed the move had actually been attempted — unsuccessfully — in training just days before. “It was the Tuesday of last week, he tried it in training, and it didn’t work. I sit next to him in the meetings, and he said, ‘did you see me try that?’, and I was like, ‘yeah, yeah, it’s never going to work’,” Redpath said. “Then he did it in the game and I just remember jumping up and saying, ‘Santi!’”

The Scotland international, 26, drew a pointed contrast between Carreras and his international teammate Finn Russell, suggesting the Argentine operates on instinct where Russell relies on calculation. “He’s the most fluid rugby player I have ever met, he is just so smooth in everything he does. He reminds me of Paul Pogba when he played football back in the day — everything seems to be in slow motion. He is just so relaxed.”

“Finn’s fluid, but he thinks a lot more about what he does. He is a lot more technical and a lot of his stuff is a lot more thought about before he does it. Finn is one step ahead of everybody; Santi is very fluid. That’s the best way I can describe the two of them.”

Carreras endured a difficult debut season at Bath in 2025/26 after joining from Premiership rivals Gloucester, making his fast start to the new campaign all the more striking. Redpath acknowledged that having two of rugby’s most naturally gifted playmakers in the same squad is not without its complications.

“At times they are brilliant. At times, when it gets a bit loose, it can be difficult,” he said. “When Santi comes back from an Argentina camp, his English is a bit worse, he says the wrong calls in training. But no, they are both brilliant, they are both great guys, and they are both so competitive as well, which is enjoyable to play with.”

Bath’s next Premiership fixture is a home meeting with Exeter — their first encounter since a painful 27-26 playoff defeat to the Chiefs last season.
