Real Madrid have made a formal offer for Manchester United academy forward JJ Gabriel, with the Spanish club reportedly willing to meet the terms set by the 16-year-old’s agent, Ali Barat. The deal is said to be worth €10 million (£8.4m) and includes a three-year contract plus bonuses, with Gabriel’s final decision on his future described as imminent.

Gabriel has been training alone near Barcelona while his representatives work to resolve his situation. United offered the teenager a scholarship contract despite his camp requesting that his registration be terminated, and the club are now reported to be resigned to losing him.

Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Bayern Munich have all monitored the situation closely. However, Barcelona sporting director Deco has publicly denied his club’s interest, and Bayern are said to have fallen behind the two La Liga sides in the race for Gabriel’s signature. Real Madrid’s readiness to meet Gabriel’s financial demands gives them a clear advantage, with Barcelona reportedly unwilling to enter a bidding war.

The financial implications for United depend heavily on where Gabriel ends up. A move to a Premier League rival would entitle the club to more than £3 million plus a 20 per cent sell-on clause. A transfer to a European club, however, would leave United with significantly less, with FIFA compensation figures for a Category I academy placing the fee at approximately £350,000.

Post-Brexit rules generally prevent English-based players from joining European clubs before their 18th birthday, but Gabriel appears eligible for an EU passport through dual heritage. His father, Joe O’Cearuill, played twice for the Republic of Ireland and qualifies through his Irish mother, while Gabriel’s mother is of Cypriot heritage — providing the youngster with two potential routes to European eligibility.

Should Gabriel secure the necessary documentation, the path to a move to Real Madrid or another continental club would be clear, leaving United with limited recourse and minimal financial compensation for one of their most-watched young talents.
