Ramos, 40, edges closer to La Liga return as Getafe confirm talks with defender's camp
Sergio Ramos has been without a club since leaving Monterrey in December 2025, but Getafe president Angel Torres has confirmed talks with the Spaniard's representative and says a move remains on the table for 2027.
Sergio Ramos could be set for a return to La Liga with Getafe, after club president Angel Torres confirmed that talks have taken place with the 40-year-old’s brother and representative, Rene Ramos. Torres stressed that any deal would still require manager Jose Bordalas’ approval and that current squad needs would have to shift before a transfer materialised.
Ramos has been without a club since his time with Mexican side Monterrey ended in December 2025. His final appearance came in the Apertura Playoffs semi-final, where he scored a penalty against Toluca before his side lost 3-2 on aggregate.
A move to Getafe would deliver an unexpected reunion with Dani Carvajal, the former Real Madrid right-back who recently signed with the Madrid-based club until June 2027. Ramos and Carvajal were long-time team-mates at the Bernabéu, and Torres has acknowledged that the pair could yet share a dressing room again.
“It’s a topic that we’ve been chasing for a long time,” Torres told reporters. “But it was not the priority. Now, we have that position well covered. It’s not a position that, right now, needs reinforcement. The manager wanted reinforcement in other positions. But it’s not too late yet. I mean, it’s on the list for the future.”
Torres clarified that Getafe would be “willing to study the signing, if circumstances were favourable,” pointing to a potential move in 2027 rather than the current window.
The timing of any deal may well depend on Getafe’s form. The club currently sit 15th in La Liga, having collected just eight points from eight matches this season. Should that run continue, the pressure to add experience and quality to the backline could accelerate interest in Ramos.
At 40, Ramos would be one of the oldest outfield players in the Spanish top flight, but his pedigree — five La Liga titles and four Champions League winners’ medals, all with Real Madrid — remains unmatched. Whether Bordalas ultimately sanctions the move will be the deciding factor.
