Real Madrid are closing in on the signing of Manchester United academy forward JJ Gabriel, with the 16-year-old set to move to the Spanish capital in January after a breakdown in his relationship with the Old Trafford hierarchy.

Gabriel, who turned 16 last month, informed United of his desire to leave in September, and his representatives subsequently held talks with several of Europe’s biggest clubs, including Bayern Munich and Barcelona. Multiple reports on Wednesday indicated he has chosen Real Madrid and agreed personal terms. Although no club-to-club negotiations have taken place, the move is expected to be completed in the winter window. Gabriel is understood to hold an EU passport, which allows the transfer to proceed at his age, while United will be entitled to compensation for the loss of a homegrown academy player.

The forward has not trained at United’s Carrington base since the rift emerged, with his family unhappy about the club’s cautious approach to his development. They were particularly frustrated by his limited involvement during pre-season and his exclusion from Champions League fixtures this season.

United manager Michael Carrick addressed the situation when it first came to light in September. “We’ve got to be really careful of the whole situation,” Carrick said. “He’s a young boy … from a club point of view, looking after our younger players — their welfare, their wellbeing, their exposure — we’ve got to be really conscious of that in this situation.”

Gabriel, whose full name is Joseph O’Cearuill — he plays under the name JJ Gabriel reportedly for commercial reasons — is the son of former Irish international Joe O’Cearuill. He grew up in London and passed through the academies of Chelsea, Arsenal, West Ham, and Queens Park Rangers before joining United’s youth setup at the age of 11.

He first attracted widespread attention at just eight years old, when a viral YouTube video showcasing his skills earned him the nickname “Kid Messi”. At United, he quickly established himself as one of the club’s most coveted young talents, becoming the youngest-ever winner of the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award last season after scoring more than 20 goals for the Under-18 side. He was also named Under-18 Premier League Player of the Season.

Gabriel primarily operates as a left winger or in the number ten role. His departure, should it be confirmed, would represent a significant setback for United’s academy programme.
