Barcelona are tracking Aston Villa’s record signing Johan Manzambi, according to Spanish outlet Sport, with Blaugrana sporting director Deco and manager Hansi Flick using Tuesday’s 3-0 Champions League victory over Villa at Camp Nou to assess the Swiss midfielder at close quarters.

The report suggests Barcelona are weighing whether to make a formal move for Manzambi in the future — a development that will inevitably prompt questions about how long Unai Emery can sustain his project at Villa Park.

Emery has already overseen one significant rebuild at the club. After winning the Europa League last season, Villa sold Emiliano Martinez, Ezri Konsa, Lucas Digne, Youri Tielemans, Morgan Rogers and Ollie Watkins, stripping the spine from the squad that delivered that trophy. The Basque manager steadied the ship impressively following a difficult start to the current campaign, but the prospect of losing another cornerstone signing — one brought in only this summer — adds a new layer of pressure.

Villa have demonstrated a willingness to sell their most valuable assets in recent years, using the £100 million generated by Jack Grealish’s departure to reinvest and manage Profit and Sustainability Regulations (PSR) constraints that have shadowed much of Emery’s tenure. That pattern has not gone unnoticed.

FourFourTwo understands that Emery remains fully committed to his project at Villa. But the 55-year-old has already achieved considerable success at the club — guiding them to seventh, fourth, sixth and fourth in the Premier League, reaching the Conference League semi-finals and Champions League quarter-finals, and delivering European silverware — and another forced sale of a key player could reasonably prompt him to reassess.

Emery’s track record at Sevilla, Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain marks him as one of the most decorated club managers in European football, and Villa’s continued vulnerability to poaching from bigger clubs means the question of how long he stays is unlikely to go away. The interest in Manzambi, however early-stage, is the latest test of that commitment.

Villa’s next Premier League fixture takes them to Manchester United.
