Butt, the former United midfielder and academy director, had been unequivocal in his assessment of Rashford’s future at Old Trafford. Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, he said: “Yeah, I think that ship’s sailed. I think over the last two or three seasons he’s shown that he needs to move football clubs.”

Butt went further, contextualising Rashford’s exit within a broader narrative of the club’s decline. “Man United are not winning anything at the minute, they’re slipping down the tables of the biggest clubs in the world,” he said, before adding: “Big players leave football clubs. Bigger players than Marcus have left Man United, and bigger players will leave the football club in the future as well.”

He was not without warmth toward Rashford personally, acknowledging the forward’s deep roots at the club. “He’s been there since he was seven years of age, I know his family love the football club as well, but life moves on,” Butt said. “He’s a phenomenal footballer” who he hoped would look back on the Barcelona move as a shining chapter in his career.

Instead, Rashford is back. Having featured in United’s opening three Premier League games this season, he has started the last two — a development that directly contradicts Butt’s assertion that the door had closed permanently.

Rashford has yet to register a goal or assist in the current campaign, but his performances have drawn praise from club legend Peter Schmeichel. After United’s 2-2 draw with Everton, the former goalkeeper was effusive: “Coming away from that game, Rashford is now smelling of roses. I thought he was absolutely fantastic.” Schmeichel highlighted the constant threat Rashford posed down the left flank through his directness against the Toffees’ backline.

Whether Rashford’s reintegration proves permanent or merely a prelude to another departure remains to be seen, but for now the facts sit awkwardly alongside Butt’s confident verdict.
