Rashford blasted for lack of intensity as United slump to controversial derby defeat

Manchester United slipped to a 1-0 home defeat against Manchester City on Sunday, leaving them 13th in the Premier League after four games and heaping pressure on manager Michael Carrick.

Erling Haaland’s close-range finish, assisted by Josko Gvardiol’s cross, was initially ruled out for offside before VAR intervened. The review determined that Patrick Dorgu’s boot kept Haaland onside and that Enzo Fernandez’s attempted diving header did not constitute interference with play. The goal stood — though officiating body Pro Ref later admitted the decision was “an error of judgment”.

The defeat drew sharp criticism of United’s attacking players. Club legend Jaap Stam was particularly scathing about the lack of defensive effort from Marcus Rashford, Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Bruno Fernandes in the moments leading up to the goal.

“It’s a long ball, they win it, City takes over and look at the front four,” Stam said. “They’re just walking, they’re just looking at the situation. A team that really wants to win — the strikers, it’s about all the 11, it’s about chasing. Against ten men, it’s about tracking back, it’s about winning battles. From then on, you keep possession, you go out in transition and then you try to create and score goals.”

Amid the gloom, Kobbie Mainoo offered one of the few bright spots for United. The 21-year-old England midfielder led his side in touches, successful passes, defensive contributions and chances created, and came close to opening his account for the season when a long-range strike rattled the post.

Mainoo’s display caught the eye of City’s Elliot Anderson, who faced his England team-mate across the midfield battle. The £116 million signing said: “It was great. It was a good battle. He’s a top, top player, you know, and it’s always tough playing against Kobbie, but yeah, he’s a real good player and a real nice guy.”

United’s second league defeat of the season leaves Carrick with little room for manoeuvre as the club attempts to find its footing in the early weeks of the campaign.
