Fermin Lopez shuts down Man Utd links and vows to retire at Barcelona
Fermin Lopez has dismissed speculation linking him with a move to Manchester United, declaring after Barcelona's 6-1 win over Alaves that he intends to spend the rest of his career at the Catalan club.
Fermin Lopez has publicly ruled out a transfer to Manchester United, insisting he wants to retire at Barcelona after starring in the La Liga leaders’ 6-1 demolition of Alaves on Saturday.
“Manchester United links? I don’t pay attention to that kind of news,” the 23-year-old midfielder said after full-time. “I want to stay here at Barcelona as long as possible. I hope to end my football career at this club and retire here.”
Lopez was instrumental in the victory, scoring once and providing two assists to underline why he has attracted attention from some of Europe’s biggest clubs. He has registered six goals and six assists across 13 appearances in all competitions this season, starting eight of Barcelona’s 11 league games.
United had been reported as potential suitors for the Spaniard as they look to add goals and creativity to their midfield. Lopez was also a target for Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain last year, with Chelsea reportedly having a £40 million bid rejected.
His rejection of a move will sting United in particular. Captain Bruno Fernandes remains their primary goal threat but is entering the final year of his contract, and the club have been searching for a player capable of supplementing his output. Fernandes recorded 31 goal involvements last season — just one more than Lopez managed as Barcelona successfully defended the La Liga title.
Hansi Flick’s side sit top of the table with 30 points and appear on course for a third consecutive league championship. Lopez’s form this term is all the more impressive given he missed Spain’s triumphant World Cup campaign over the summer after being ruled out through injury.
