Man United scout Lens teenager Mesloub as Gabriel replacement after transfer request

Manchester United have identified Lens teenager Mezian Mesloub as a potential replacement for JJ Gabriel, after the 15-year-old submitted a formal request to cancel his registration at the club and leave as a free agent.

The Telegraph first reported last week that Gabriel had served notice of his wish to depart Old Trafford with immediate effect. United were caught off guard by the decision — Gabriel had been in line to feature in the Carabao Cup squad against Brighton, a match in which he would have become the club’s youngest-ever player, surpassing David Gaskell, who was 16 years and 19 days old on his debut in 1956.

Despite the shock, United believe the situation remains salvageable. Gabriel cannot be de-registered without the agreement of all parties, and he still has time remaining on his contract. However, he will be entitled to negotiate a move abroad once he turns 16 next month, a process made easier by his Irish passport.

With that possibility in mind, United’s scouting department has turned its attention to Mesloub, according to TEAMtalk. The 16-year-old has emerged as one of the most talked-about young players in European football after making his professional debut for Lens in May 2026, coming off the bench against Nantes and scoring just five seconds after his introduction to help his side secure the win.

Mesloub has since made his Champions League debut as a second-half substitute against Slavia Prague, providing an assist in a 3-2 victory. The 2009-born midfielder is currently deployed as an inverted right winger at Lens but can also operate as a No.10 or on the left flank. He has drawn attention for his athleticism, technical ability, and composure in the final third.

United are not alone in their interest. Arsenal, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, and Monaco are also conducting scouting work on Mesloub, meaning any pursuit would likely develop into a competitive race for his signature.
