PSG fined for unplayable pitch at Parc des Princes; Rennes loses €500,000

The LFP has ruled: Paris Saint-Germain has been handed a €150,000 fine after the Parc des Princes pitch was deemed unplayable for the opening Ligue 1 matchday against Stade Rennais, forcing the club to relocate the match to Roazhon Park.

The Competition Commission applied article 501.4 of the LFP’s competition regulations, which governs clubs’ obligations regarding pitch playability and backup stadiums. The financial penalty is confirmed, but it does not resolve everything.

Rennes, the big loser

Stade Rennais had submitted a separate request to the Commission: to retain the benefit of hosting the return fixture as compensation for the damage suffered from organizing the opening match on short notice. The Commission rejected this request. The League’s statement is unambiguous: “The match is reversed and will be held at Parc des Princes.”

For the Rouge et Noir, hosting PSG is always an event with strong commercial potential — ticket sales, partnerships, visibility. Forced to organize this fixture at short notice, they were unable to maximize its returns. According to Ouest-France, the Breton club estimates its lost revenue at €500,000, more than three times the fine imposed on PSG.

A grueling schedule on top

The Commission’s decision also worsens Rennes’ sporting situation. Franck Haise’s team will have to string together five away matches in six matchdays between late February and early April, with demanding fixtures away against Marseille, PSG, Lille and Monaco. A sequence that promises to be particularly taxing for an already stretched squad.

In the end, PSG pays a fine and gets its stadium back for the return match. Rennes, meanwhile, absorbs an estimated €500,000 financial loss and a heavier schedule — without official compensation.
