Man United to trigger Martinez extension clause while pursuing £50m Branthwaite deal
Manchester United plan to activate a 12-month extension clause in Lisandro Martinez's contract to secure a transfer fee for the Argentine, as the club simultaneously targets Everton centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite to overhaul their struggling defence.
Manchester United are set to trigger a 12-month extension clause in Lisandro Martinez’s contract, protecting their ability to command a transfer fee for the Argentine while they pursue Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite as a defensive reinforcement.
Martinez, signed by Erik ten Hag from Ajax for £56 million in 2022, was widely expected to leave Old Trafford as a free agent this summer after a turbulent spell marked by persistent injuries and a public criticism of the club’s hierarchy, in which he accused United’s leadership of failing to invest adequately in the squad. With Atletico Madrid among the clubs linked with his signature, United’s decision to invoke the extension clause ensures they will not lose him for nothing.
Branthwaite has long been on United’s radar. The Everton centre-back, who has established himself as one of the standout defenders in the Premier League this season, was the subject of offers reaching £50 million from United in a previous window, all of which were rejected by the Toffees. The club is expected to revive that interest in the summer as it looks to address what is internally acknowledged as a recruitment shortfall.
The United hierarchy are understood to accept that last summer’s transfer business fell below the required standard. The failure to sign a left-back has been particularly costly, with Luke Shaw’s injury forcing the club into makeshift solutions after a move for Newcastle’s Lewis Hall — reportedly high on their wishlist — did not materialise.
Harry Maguire and Shaw remain experienced figures in the backline, but questions persist over how much they have left at the highest level. Leny Yoro, signed last summer, is considered a long-term asset, and Ayden Heaven — recruited from Arsenal — has drawn positive reviews in his limited appearances.
Branthwaite’s arrival would represent a significant statement of intent as United attempt to rebuild a defence that has been one of the primary reasons for their difficult season.
